Water damage

Many people wrongly believe that water damage is easier to deal with than secondary damage after fire. In reality, water damage of technical equipment is far more complicated than it appears to be. Assisting with the correct first aid is directly dependent on how fast we are on the spot – preferably while the water is still there.
The importance of the conductivity of water
AREPA’s starting point for the assessment of this type of damage takes its starting point in the different conditions on the site. Among the important investigations are the measurements of the water's conductivity, which shows the water's ability to conduct electricity. In connection with corrosion this parameter is important for two reasons.
Galvanic corrosion
First of all water’s ability to conduct electricity indicates the concentration of dissolved salts in the water. When drying, the salts will crystallize and advance the process of corrosion as it attracts moisture to the surface. Following the introduction of moisture at the junction of two different metals, a potential difference, or voltage, may exist. Again this is directly related to the conductivity of the water. This potential difference can then lead to corrosion as described below.

Electrolytic corrosion
Secondly the conductivity of water influences the risk of electrolytic corrosion. As an example electrolytic corrosion occurs around the backup-batteries on printed circuit boards if water is capable of carrying an electrical current between the poles of the batteries. Conductivity also indicates the risk of short circuit on printed circuit boards and in electrical systems.
AREPAs service
In addition our project managers measure the relative humidity in the surroundings and the temperature. Our effort is carried out according to these measurements and our practical experience in this field. AREPA uses two methods of first aid for water damage depending on the assessment of the type of contamination and the affected equipment. One is to quickly dry the equipment and the other is immediate cleaning of the equipment while it is still wet.
